Acting in defence of its Jordanian airbase, home to a fleet of Rafales whose primary purpose is the fight against jihadist insurrection, French jets helped intercept Israeli missiles on Saturday. France has a large security presence in the Middle East with three military bases in Jordan, Iraq and the UAE. The foreign minister spoke on national news on Sunday to nuance the French intervention. We took responsibility because we are a regional security actor. We have bases including in Jordan and UAE. And the Iranian attack didn't just threaten Israel's security but endangered French forces and violated the airspace of our Arab partners. The French government does not want to be seen as participating in the conflict and insists that it acted in defence of its own regional presence, although Israel has hailed the support of its so-called partners on Saturday night. The IDF blocked this attack in the most impressive way, together with our partners, the Americans and others. France has cautioned Israel against retaliation, the president calling to isolate and further sanction Iran instead.
