French President Emmanuel Macron has officially acknowledged that France led a repressive war in Cameroon during the country's fight for independence. In a letter to Cameroon's President Paul Beya, Macron took responsibility for violent actions against insurgent movements, which occurred both before and after Cameroon's independence in 1960.

This is the first time France has formally described its actions in Cameroon as a 'war.' Macron's statement follows a historians' report presented earlier in the year, which found that French troops likely killed tens of thousands of Cameroonians between 1945 and 1971. The acknowledgment also includes France's role in the killings of independence leaders, notably the murder of Ruben Umniobi in 1958.
