I am very hopeful Venezuela will be free and we will turn a country into a beacon of hope and opportunity of democracy. As we've reported, the Trump administration has been ramping up military pressure on Venezuela's president, Nicolas Maduro. Earlier, our partners at BBC News spoke to Machado, who blamed Maduro for the recent tensions. Look, President Trump has offered Maduro, and he has said it publicly several times, to go through a peaceful process to dismantle the criminal structure and has insisted that the criminal activities have to stop, which has not happened on the contrary. So we didn't want a war. We didn't look for it. The Venezuelan people want to live, you know, in democracy and freedom, justice. It was Maduro who declared war on the Venezuelan people with state terrorism and abroad with narco-terrorism. Now, Machado has been in hiding since January. She asked Venezuelans to unite against President Maduro's government, and it has threatened to arrest her. CBS News has learned she escaped Venezuela via the Dutch-controlled island of Curaçao. And at a news conference this morning, she said the U.S. government helped her get to Norway.

One day after capturing an oil tanker off Venezuela's coast, the U.S. has sanctioned three of Nicolas Maduro's nephews, along with six other oil tankers.
