California is remembering the devastating fires that ravaged parts of Los Angeles one year ago. CBS News' Jonathan Vigliotti reports.

Families in Altadena, Los Angeles, are marking one year since the Eaton Fire destroyed homes, churches, and personal belongings. The Ben family, who have lived in the area for six generations, lost nearly everything but have focused on supporting each other and rebuilding their routines. 

Many relatives remain in temporary housing, but the family is determined to return and not sell their land. Music and community gatherings, such as a candlelight vigil, have provided healing and a sense of unity as they reflect on both their losses and enduring bonds.

I remember the family room for generations. This plot of land on East Les Flores Drive in Alta Dina is where the band family gathered to celebrate life's most memorable events. 86 year old Marie Ben is the family's matriarch. I have not cried. Why? I guess it's because we lost everything. But we didn't lose each other. They eat and fire robbed his family of their homes, their church, even their instruments, but not their spirit. There is so much loss here everywhere we look, but there is so much joy on this property. Every time we have the opportunity to really sink into the sadness and into the loss it's met by all of these really beautiful things. We first met Marie's granddaughter Lauren and Lauren's father Oscar last January as three of the family members crammed into an Airbnb. My stuff, all my stuff is gone. What has that year been like? Trying to move in some direction forward to be able to go back to work to put the kids in school and create another routine of life in an entirely different place. And this is a family six generations. Oh yeah, six generations. That one family staying in Alta Dina is in their home. Hundreds of their Alta Dina relatives live in temporary housing but are committed to returning. Instead of selling the land. Music has always been the family's saving grace, a source of healing. On Monday they were rehearsing for a community candlelight vigil to mark one year of so much change. When you lose everything, it's very clear what you do have. And for us, that was really just our voices. It was the most soothing thing.
