As a massive recovery effort continues across Florida, AccuWeather is taking a look at where Milton stands in terms of things like the total number of tornadoes and power outages.

Hurricane Milton has caused significant challenges across Florida, prompting a massive recovery effort to restore power and assess damage. Since the storm made landfall, over 3.8 million power accounts have been restored, leaving only 369,000 still outstanding, which means approximately 97% of the state now has electricity. At one point, 3.4 to 3.5 million addresses were without power, representing a notable recovery effort by electrical utility crews.

The hurricane brought severe weather including powerful wind gusts and heavy rainfall. Wind gusts were recorded as high as 105 mph, particularly around the St. Petersburg area, with rainfall totaling 18.87 inches. Furthermore, 17 tornadoes have been confirmed as a result of the storm, with this number expected to increase as more surveys are conducted. Among these were three EF3 tornadoes, marking significant strength compared to historical data, such as the eight EF3s recorded from Hurricane Bula in 1967.

Preliminary estimates from AccuWeather indicate that economic damage and loss related to Hurricane Milton may reach between $160 to $180 billion. This estimation underscores the substantial impact of this storm on the region's infrastructure and economy.



Looking at Hurricane Milton by the numbers

Since the storm hit Florida, Hurricane Milton, there have been over 3.8 million accounts restored for power. So right now about 97% of the state is electrified and operational. There's about 369,000 that are still outstanding. This is a monumental power recovery there, and electrical utility crews have been assembled in huge numbers out there. So again, at one point we had 3.4 to 3.5 million addresses in Florida without electricity, and now we're down to only about 9% of that still without power, so huge progress by the numbers. As we look at Milton, we have had gusts of wind measured as high as 105 mph, but sometimes you get an isolated report that kind of outpaces the others. We've had numbers of reports here, 4, 5, 6 reports around the St. Petersburg area of gusts of wind over 100 mph and total rainfall 18.87 inches. We've been talking about some of these numbers for a while. Here we are learning more about the number of actual confirmed tornadoes. Storm surveys are coming in, and we are up to 17 confirmed so far, but that number is rising. Just for historical context, Beryl earlier this year produced 68 separate tornadoes. That's the fifth most for any landfalling hurricane. 20 years ago, look at Ivan, that produced 118 separate tornadoes. But one thing worth pointing out, we had some strong tornadoes with this one. We had three separate EF3s that were confirmed out of this one. You have to go back to 1967 with Hurricane Bula that had eight confirmed EF3s or F3s at that time from that one. And by the numbers, the AccuWeather preliminary estimate for economic damage and loss tied to Milton, $160 to $180 billion.
