AccuWeather's Long-Range Expert Joe Lundberg looks ahead to next week, highlighting a period of persistent cold from the Dakotas to the Northeast and the potential for snow and ice from the Midwest into the Northeast.

Meteorologist Joe Lumberg forecasts a stormy weather pattern for the central and eastern United States from December 12 to 16, with persistent cold air, snow, and ice expected from the Dakotas to the Northeast. The Northwest will continue to experience coastal rain and mountain snow, while California is predicted to remain dry following a wet November.

Relief from the cold is anticipated only after December 17, as the jet stream is expected to flatten and bring temperatures closer to historical averages in some regions. However, cold air will remain entrenched in central and western Canada, and any new storms could still cause weather disruptions through the Christmas period.

Looking ahead: snow, ice and frigid air

All right, it's that time of the morning where we take a look at next week, but we're going to delve a little Deeper in the next week. I want to bring them on in the crystal ball meteorologist joe lumberg Joe lots to talk about a week from now. Yeah, it's a really stormy pattern There's a lot of cold air on the playing field. It's not going away anytime soon I think there's some good news though There's some light at the end of the tunnel as we get closer to christmas, but for the period december 12th through 16th So that's next friday into the beginning of the following week persistent cold that is not going away from the dakotas to the northeast There's a snow and ice threat next weekend and into the early part of the following week As the cold air tries to get dislodged across the midwest and into the northeast and there's going to be bouts of coastal rain and mountain Snow persisting in the northwest. Here's the big picture for that period You'll see a dip of the jet stream coming out of the northeast pacific into the northwest That's that fire hose of moisture that keeps hitting at the northwest underneath it. It's warm and dry in the southwest But there's extreme cold in western and central canada pieces that keep getting breaking away and coming south and east Anytime there's a little area of low pressure that could cause some problems There's actually a concern for one in this thursday to friday time period Moving through that could be the last opportunity for some decent snows in the northeast Beyond that then you'll start to see a little bulge in the jet stream and as that tries to push warmer air From the southwest up into the middle part of the nation's midsection You're going to see some wintry precipitation. The northern areas are favored for snow I think you're going to have to deal with some ice You're just not going to get rid of all that cold air Without some kind of problem during that period as we go into that week leading up to christmas, you know, and and joe You know winter was a little delayed from the lakes toward the northeast A lot of people are asking where is winter now? A lot of people are asking. All right I've had enough. When can we finally get rid of this cold? Well, it's not going to be in this period I think it's going to have to be after the 17th There's probably one more shot of cold air that comes in at the back end of the period We're focusing on it as we get to the 17th and beyond I think the jet stream starts to flatten out a little bit a little bit of ridging comes into the Central plains and as that happens what I think will happen is you'll start to see some relief The cold doesn't completely go away here across the greatly to the northeast But instead of being 5 10 15 degrees below historical averages, you might be much closer to those averages The cold air though is not going away in central and western canada That's going to have to be dealt with any storm that comes along and this flow is going to cause some problems You know joe we got off to a such a wet start In california during the month of november, but it looks like it's going to be a pretty dried december We've turned the spigots off and it looks like it's going to stay that way for the foreseeable future All that moisture is now added up for the northwest.
