We’ve seen an increase in the number of tragic stories surrounding lightning strikes in recent days. Amid the deadliest time of year for lightning strikes, here are some things to remember if you’re spending time outside and storms are threatening.

First, know that you should be heading inside as soon as you get that first lightning alert on the Weather Channel app. Most people are not struck during the worst of the storm. They get hit by lightning before or after the downpours, and strong winds are overhead. You can get hit by a lightning bolt as far as 25 miles away from the apparent thunderstorm. And when the storm arrives, stop doing dishes and stay out of the shower. Those aren't myths, you really can get struck by lightning while doing either. But you should know that the most important thing you can do when a storm's approaching is go inside. If you do that, your risk will be greatly reduced. Stay safe this summer.
