Dawn Staley, one of the most accomplished figures in women's basketball, shared her perspective on the rivalry between Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark during an interview with CNN’s Laura Coates. Staley stated that rivalries are a natural part of all sports and can be beneficial, as they generate interest and attention for women's basketball.

She cautioned, however, that media coverage should remain respectful and not become harmful. Staley emphasized that both athletes have described recent events as simply basketball plays and encouraged the public to focus on the positive exposure the rivalry brings to the sport.

What did you make of this Angel Rees-Kaitlyn Clark media rivalry? I think, one, I actually like it, to be quite honest. Here's why, because all sports have it. Every sport, every men's sport, every women's sport should have it. But it gets to a point where it's dangerous, you know, when you have people speak about them in an unpleasant way. I just think that what just took place, both young ladies said it was a basketball play. Let's move on. Everybody else has all these think pieces on how they think these young ladies feel against each other. And it's not so, even if it was, they're not showing it. So why should all these think pieces think they actually know when they just started watching women's basketball? But I will say this. They're talking about it because it gets them more clicks. They're talking, it gets them more views. So I like it in the sense of we're being talked about. We're going to get to the other good stuff because they're going to want more and more, more and more of Kaitlyn Clark, more and more of Angel Rees. That means more and more women's basketball. So we win either way. As long as we're controlling that narrative, I think it's best for women's basketball.
