The Lebanese army, alongside UN peacekeeping forces, has been dismantling Hezbollah military positions in southern Lebanon following a ceasefire that ended last year's conflict with Israel. The operation, covering over 1,000 square kilometers south of the Litani River, has seen up to 500 sites removed, but the army faces difficulties due to limited resources and incomplete information about the locations of all munitions.

A U.S.-backed roadmap calls for Lebanon to fully disarm Hezbollah within a set timeframe, after which Israel is expected to withdraw from southern positions. However, doubts remain about the feasibility of the four-month deadline, especially as Hezbollah is unlikely to surrender its arsenal north of the Litani River. Iran, a key supporter of Hezbollah, opposes the disarmament plan, and there are warnings that using force could threaten Lebanon's internal peace.

Another incident involving Lebanese army soldiers killed while removing munitions in southern Lebanon. The military has been dismantling Hezbollah sites along the border with Israel. And it's doing this with UN peacekeeping troops, as part of a ceasefire that ended last year's conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. We have sketches. We have, of course, maps, our own maps, but based on our understanding of where all these areas are. But there are no maps provided by other parties. Since the November truce, up to 500 Hezbollah military positions have been dismantled south of the Litani River, an area that covers more than 1,000 square kilometers. We need to be pragmatic. There are challenges. One of the challenges is that we still don't have all the Lebanese army presence in the south as much as they would want to. There is a serious commitment from the Lebanese army to be there. But the Lebanese army also, they need to be equipped with the proper capacities and capabilities. And in this area, Hezbollah has agreed to cooperate. Now, the government has asked the army to come up with a plan to achieve full disarmament by the end of the year, part of a U.S. roadmap that calls on Lebanon to formally commit to disarming Hezbollah, after which Israel will halt its attacks. Lebanon will then begin to implement the plan, while Israel begins withdrawing from positions in southern Lebanon. It should fully withdraw within 90 days. And within 120 days, Hezbollah's remaining arsenal must be dismantled. I don't know what is the situation in the north of the country in terms of presence of weapons, but I can already see that in the south, with our support, with the number of troops of the Lebanese army that is increasing, is a challenge. It's not known what is left of Hezbollah's arsenal, and some believe the four-month timetable is not realistic, especially since the group won't give up its weapons north of the Litani River. Using force could threaten internal peace. Then there is Iran, the main backer of Hezbollah, believed essential in any effort to disarm the group. And it has been sending messages. It says it is opposed to Hezbollah's disarmament, and any plan will not succeed. But the Lebanese state has not been discussing the file with the Iranian leadership. Instead, it has told it to focus on the issues of its own people. Hezbollah might be trying to reposition itself in Lebanon's post-war landscape by looking for security guarantees and more political power in exchange for its weapons.
