These additions include terms such as "chemsex", "hypertrucage", "prompt", "bombe carbone", "drag", and "cécifoot". The selection process for new entries now incorporates artificial intelligence, which gathers potential terms for review by the dictionary's editorial team.

The updated dictionary reflects both evolving language and current societal issues. For example, "prompt", a term familiar to artificial intelligence enthusiasts, and "bombe carbone", meaning "carbon bomb", have been added. The phrase "larme de sirène" or "mermaid's tears" is now included, describing microplastics found on shorelines. Following increased attention to issues such as chemical submission in the wake of the Giselle Pelico trial, related terms like "soumission chimique" have also been included.

In addition to linguistic changes, the 2026 edition features names of public figures who gained prominence during the Paris Olympic Games, such as rugby player Antoine Dupont and swimmer Léon Marchand. Despite these updates, Le Petit Robert maintains its core of approximately 65,000 words and expressions, with major content revisions occurring every five to ten years.

There are more than 150 of these new additions, words and expressions that have managed to make the jump, from use in the streets to the hallowed pages of France's dictionaries. Chill, it's something that's cool. Danguerie, it's something that's crazy, out of this world. Tarpin, I don't know, it must be a generational thing. Magaté, it must mean someone you like a lot. Be it a change in a term's definition, an English language word that's become common in French or regional expressions, the some 20 employees at Le Petit Robert, one of France's main dictionary publishers, say they now use artificial intelligence to help decide what warrants being added. For the words that are not in the dictionary yet, the AI tool assembles them and then it's up to us to analyse and see if the word is pertinent and in what context it's used. For French AI aficionados, the English word prompt is now in French dictionaries, along with bombe carbone or carbon bomb, and the poetic but concerning larme de sirène or mermaid's tears, a term used for microplastics that wash up on shores. Following the Giselle Pelico trial and a raised awareness about date rape drugs, the words soumission chimique or chemical submission were also added. Celebrities and public figures are also listed in many of France's dictionaries. On the heels of the Paris Summer Olympics, the now sports giants rugbyman Antoine Dupont and the swimmer Léon Marchand have also had their names added. But when it comes to dictionaries, welcoming in the new doesn't mean having to ditch the old or any of the 65,000 words and expressions within their pages. While there are around 150 editions every year, the culling only happens every 5 to 10 years.

The talk comes a day after President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed Ukraine, Iran and other issues in a call the Kremlin described as "frank and constructive."
