Jamaica is making preparations as Hurricane Melissa begins to impact the island with initial rain bands. Crews in Kingston are working to clear debris from drainage channels to prevent flooding, as concerns grow that heavy rainfall could overwhelm these areas and affect nearby neighborhoods.

The hurricane has already caused significant damage in the Dominican Republic, including flooding, landslides, and widespread disruption to water supplies. While some businesses in Kingston are boarding up, there is a noted lack of urgency among residents, possibly due to the infrequency of major hurricanes in recent years.

for a closer look at how Jamaica is preparing for the worst. Let's turn now to CBS is Jason Allen in Kingston, the capital. The waterfront here in Kingston is empty tonight. The first very light bands of rain from Melissa really just now starting to impact the island. And there are some parts of the city where they are still racing to prepare for this storm tonight. We're crews are out in a goalie that is filled up with silt and sand and debris. They're afraid that feet of rain could overwhelm these goalies and overflow into neighborhoods. Melissa has already shown its power as it passed by the Dominican Republic. Flooded rivers turned over cars, landslides, blocked roads, cutting off communities. People filled up shelters as the storm knocked out the water supply for half a million customers back in Kingston. Workers here were boarding up a few businesses right now. There's been no real sense of urgency here that you sometimes feel with a major hurricane approaching.
