The parents of an 11-year-old boy are outraged after the woman who drove into their child walked out of court with only a $2,000 fine.

Shema Zuhara, 41, was convicted of careless driving after her SUV crashed into a picnic table at Auburn South Primary School, resulting in the death of Jack Davey and serious injuries to four other children. Investigators found that Zuhara did not brake before the collision. The court imposed a $2,000 fine and a two-year driving suspension, which is below the maximum penalty for careless driving.

The family of the victim expressed their grief and called for stronger legal protections for children. The incident has led to renewed calls for a review of the state's careless driving laws and the licensing process for drivers over 25. The magistrate acknowledged Zuhara's remorse but did not accept arguments that her moral culpability was reduced.

He called for an urgent review of the state's careless driving law and how those aged over 25 are assessed for their first licence. Magistrate Vincenzo Caltabiano said, Magistrate Caltabiano acknowledged Zuhara's remorse but rejected a suggestion her moral culpability was reduced when she got behind the wheel. Her lawyer claimed she was upset after a meeting with the school principal. The court heard there was no evidence of that. Zuhara will be suspended from driving for two years. Abbey Dinnam, 10 News.
