During his tenure, Rudd was recognized for his work on key issues such as AUKUS, a critical minerals agreement, and advocating for Julian Assange. He will return to lead the Asia Society in New York, while the Australian government has yet to announce his replacement.

He has worked tirelessly. He's moving on to a role that he believes is pivotal. The PM's decision to post his outspoken Labor predecessor to Washington has long been contentious. The United States in the last four years has been run by a village idiot. Culminating in an awkward exchange at the White House. Did an ambassador say something bad about me? Don't tell me I don't know. At the end of the day, you have to look at the results. And I think, on the whole, he has been effective. Praise for his efforts securing support for AUKUS, a critical minerals deal and Julian Assange's freedom. He's done a good job in Washington, so, again, surprised why the government would agree to him going now. The government must find someone to replace Mr Rudd and provide that certainty for that relationship, which is critically important. Kevin Rudd's wrapping up at the end of March and with a replacement yet to be named, the Canberra rumour mill's in overdrive. Former ministers among the contenders, though front-runner Stephen Conroy once described Trump as moronically stupid. Scott Morrison has a good rapport with him, but there's almost no chance Labor would reward him with a prestigious posting. Whoever follows Kevin, if it's as good as that, I'll be pretty happy.
