Kansas City has launched a new initiative to improve its 311 reporting system, following concerns about unresolved complaints and public safety highlighted by a recent roof collapse at a local store. The city is partnering with the City Data Alliance and introducing artificial intelligence to streamline, automate, and better connect the 311 process. 

With nearly 20,000 open reports, city leaders hope the new technology will make the system more responsive and efficient, allowing for faster resolution of issues such as broken sidewalks and sinkholes. The program aims to not only address current problems but also predict future ones, with the goal of making the city safer and more accountable to residents.

Following the partial roof collapse at Family Dollar in Midtown Kansas City, attorneys for the victims are expected to speak out this week after filing a lawsuit. On July 27th, the roof near the entrance collapsed, killing one person. Three others were hurt. This comes as we've been looking into solutions for the safety of the city. Accountability reporter Isabella Ladan tells us about a new initiative in KCMO to improve the 3-1-1 reporting system. There are thousands of 3-1-1 complaints that the city hasn't resolved yet or closed. I'm Isabella Ladan and I cover government accountability and solutions. Earlier this year, we amplified the voices of neighbors who had trouble getting their 3-1-1 complaints fixed. I think it's probably not the best system because I think if more people are reporting it, it shows that it's a bigger issue. Since then, the city has joined a new program. It uses AI to make the 3-1-1 reporting system more efficient. From broken sidewalks to fallen trees, KCMO doesn't know what problems to fix unless residents report it. But with nearly 20,000 open KCMO reports, leaders are leaning into the City Data Alliance for improvements. Streamline, create efficiencies, automate, make things connect together where previously they were not connected. The city's chief digital officer will help analyze the 3-1-1 data. Then, they'll use AI to make the process more responsive. It's been several months, many months. Tom is frustrated about his 3-1-1 request. I almost stepped right into it. Just be careful, there's a sinkhole opening up right behind your left rear tire there. Tom says he's called and reported it more than once. Has it been checked? Is it safe? According to 3-1-1 records, there are still open requests from 2022. It should cut down on the number of open 3-1-1 requests and more than anything, it should close them faster with real responses and real reactions. Mayor Quinton Lucas hopes the technology will both fix the problems and predict them. Having a way that we get to more things faster, that we can prioritize and triage better for what's coming in, will make us fundamentally safer.
