Twelve jurors are still deciding Erin Patterson's fate in the mushroom lunch murder trial after completing a fifth day of deliberations. The group is working its way through nine weeks of evidence to determine if she intended to kill her in-laws.

The jury in a Victorian Supreme Court trial has now been deliberating for six days, making this the longest week of the trial, which was initially scheduled to last six weeks but has extended into its tenth week. Legal analysts note that while most juries reach a verdict within five days, the complexity and volume of evidence in this case have contributed to the extended deliberations. 

The jury remains sequestered and has not yet requested further guidance from the judge, nor has the judge intervened to assist them in reaching a unanimous verdict. The jurors are expected to return to court to continue their deliberations as the trial awaits a conclusion.

Sandra, tomorrow will mark six days of sitting for the jury. Typically, throughout the hearing, they had a half day on Fridays and weekends off. So sitting on Saturday does make this the longest week of the trial so far as we come to the end of week 10 in what was set to be a six-week trial. Now today we were looking up the average amount of time it takes for an Australian jury to come to a verdict in a Supreme Court trial and what we found is that legal analysts will say it's almost impossible to find an average due to the varying complexities of trials. But that few went past the five-day mark. So heading into day six is significant although with nine weeks of evidence to sift through it is also hardly surprising. Now there are a couple of things that could happen before they do reach a verdict. Firstly, the jury could call the judge back to the courtroom to ask him any legal queries they may have. The judge can also call them back to the courtroom to ask them if he can assist them with anything to see if they can reach a unanimous verdict. So far that has not happened. The jury has been sequestered back to their hotel for the evening. They'll return to court at 10.30 in the morning as will we as we stand by for a verdict in this trial. Sandra.
