So are you free tonight? Maybe. His latest role sees him a long, long way from St Kilda, deep in the American forest in a new movie called Train Dreams. This is rough work, gentlemen. Not just on the body. We just cut down trees that have been here for 500 years. Well, it's western on one hand. You know, the aesthetic of it and the world. It feels and looks like a western. And yet it's not a movie about sort of retribution or typical western tropes. It's more of a kind of a very relatable and universal sort of journey of one man's ordinary life and the celebration of that. You can't tell the story of a life without talking about death. And grief does play a big part in this film. How did you decide to tackle that? I really owe my kids and my family for filling me up with the kind of fear and ability to very closely imagine some of the stuff in this film. Obviously losing people that are close to you is the worst thing I could imagine. Joel is dad to four year old twins and making this film took him back to his own childhood in Sydney. And right next door to us was the national park that leads all the way to past Galston Gorge and Burrower and leads to the Karingai National Park. I felt like I lived on the edge of the biggest expanse of bush. Trees are effectively his co-stars in the film, which has put him firmly into the conversation for a Best Actor Oscar nomination.
