Jackson County, Missouri, has announced an extension of the 2025 property tax payment deadline to January 31, citing delays in mailing tax bills to residents. County Executive Phil LaVoda stated that the delays were due to internal government issues and not the fault of taxpayers. 

During the extension period, residents cannot pay online but can submit payments at collections departments or designated drop boxes. The county has also stated that no late fees or interest will be charged for payments made by the new deadline, and there are plans to hire additional clerks to help reduce lines at payment locations.

It's a decision that we've seen in multiple counties now because of issues actually getting the tax bills out to the residents. KSHB 41 news reporter Charlie Keegan covers politics and government for us. He's also our resident expert on Jackson County property taxes. This announcement means you have more time to come to collections departments like the one here behind my shoulder to pay your bill. The county executive told me this is all about fairness. 2025 has been a highly unusual year for Jackson County. Usually tax bills are due December 31st. Now, property owners have an extra month to pay. That's because many tax bills were not mailed by mid-November, like usual. And some may not have received it before December 31st. County Executive Phil LaVoda blamed Frank White's administration for the delay. He also pointed to bureaucracy when it came to hiring a vendor. These delays were not caused by our taxpayers. They were the result of circumstances within county government, and we will take responsibility for them. Now you have until January 31st to pay property taxes on real estate and vehicles. For this month, though, you cannot pay online. You called us when lines got long earlier this week. David Harper described it one way. I've seen it on the news, you know, and I've seen the long lines and people rushing and all that. So I know they're happy now. Harper wanted to pay his bill Friday, but county offices were closed. I told him Jackson County has decided not to add late fees or interest to bills paid by the end of the month. Since you said what you told us, the silver lining is that we got up to the 30th of January, we feel a little better. Harper's advice for the county executive is to hire more clerks so lines don't back up. And it'll make everybody happy because there won't be such long lines in such stressful situations. I talked to a gentleman who suggests that you hire more clerks to help move all this along, even with the extended month here. Are there any plans about anything like that? La Voda tells us they also expect shorter lines at the Jackson County Courthouse in Kansas City and Grandview City Hall.
