Protesters criticized the government's decision to increase defense spending in line with NATO guidelines, arguing that funds should instead be directed toward domestic priorities. The strikes come as Parliament prepares to debate the draft budget, with unions hoping their concerns will be addressed.

The city's iconic Colosseum, packed not with tourists but protesters. People can't make it to the end of the month. This budget doesn't raise wages or allow people to retire. It doesn't strengthen public services. Money for salaries, not weapons, reads this banner. Italy's Prime Minister Giorgio Maloney has cultivated warm ties with US President Donald Trump and agreed to up Italy's defence spending to 2% of GDP, in line with NATO guidelines. That too has angered protesters. The President of the United States is attacking our European welfare model. We're protective of our model because healthcare and public education are priorities for us. We don't have external enemies, as they say. We have no one who wants to invade us. We should invest our money in the priorities of this country, which certainly aren't weapons. Railway staff have joined the strike, leading to disruptions across the country. But limited train services are still running. Hospitals and the postal service are also affected. Protesters hope when Parliament debates the draft budget next week, their message still rings loud and clear.
