Allies have urged Israel to refrain from causing what the UN has said will be a humanitarian catastrophe, and public opinion is divided on the matter, with only 44% of Israelis expressing support for such an attack. But Israeli authorities remain unmoved, saying Rafa is the hideout of four Hamas battalions and that hostages are being held there.
