Israel's military said it struck targets in two southern Lebanese towns it says were being used by Hezbollah. Earlier, medics at Al-Kuwaiti Hospital in western Khan Younis, Gaza, said they recovered the bodies of five Palestinians, including two children, after an Israeli missile strike at an encampment.

Israeli military forces have carried out airstrikes on targets in both Gaza and Lebanon, despite ceasefire agreements in both regions. In Gaza, a strike on a tent city near Khan Younis resulted in at least five deaths, including two children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The Israeli military stated the action was in response to an attack by Hamas that injured five Israeli soldiers near Rafah.

In Lebanon, Israeli strikes targeted Hezbollah positions, continuing a pattern of regular attacks despite a ceasefire in place for over a year. Additionally, Israel announced plans to reopen the Rafah border crossing with Egypt for people exiting Gaza, but not for those seeking to return, leaving many Palestinians in Egypt uncertain about when they can re-enter Gaza.

Israel has identified the remains of a hostage's body handed over by Hamas. The body belongs to a 42-year-old agricultural worker from Thailand. He had been employed in a kibbutz and was killed on October 7, 2023, during the Hamas-led attack on Israel. His body was then taken into Gaza. The remains of one other deceased hostage, a slain Israeli police officer, has yet to be returned to Israel. Meantime, there has been more violence in both Lebanon and Gaza. The Israeli military says it has begun airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Israel has also carried out a strike on the southern part of the Gaza Strip. It says it was in retaliation for an earlier attack. Tom Perry is following this part of the story. He joins me now from Jerusalem. So Tom, let's talk a little bit more about what happened on both fronts here. Well, in Lebanon, we saw a statement from the Israel Defense Forces today saying that they had once again targeted Hezbollah terrorists, they call them, in southern Lebanon. You may remember about a week and a half ago, the IDF launched a strike in the southern suburbs of Beirut and assassinated a senior Hezbollah commander. They've been fairly regularly hitting targets in southern Lebanon. They've done that again today, despite there being a ceasefire in place in Lebanon for more than a year now. In Gaza, where there is also a ceasefire in place, we saw overnight an Israeli strike in or around Hanounis in a tent city, a large area where displaced persons were living in really in makeshift shelters. Now we saw images last night of flames in the camp. We saw images of men with buckets trying to douse the fire. We saw an ambulance taking away some of the injured. And today we saw funerals for some of the people who were killed in that strike. The Gaza Health Ministry says at least five people were killed, including two children. Now, Israel says it was targeting Hamas terrorists, and it says that the strike came in response to what it calls a flagrant violation of the ceasefire by Hamas, that being an attack against Israeli troops near Rafah, in which five Israeli soldiers were injured, one of them seriously. This, though, of course, as in Lebanon, not the first time we've seen Israel launching strikes, attacking despite there being a ceasefire. The Gaza Health Ministry says, in fact, more than 350 Palestinians have been killed since the October ceasefire. Three Israeli soldiers have been killed in that same period. Another major development, Tom. Israel says it will reopen the Rafah border crossing with Egypt in the coming days. But there are conditions. So what do we know so far about this plan? We heard from Israel yesterday an announcement that the Rafah crossing would be opening in the coming days. Now, the big condition that Israel put on this was that it was for exiting Gaza only. Now, if you remember, Rafah connects Gaza and Egypt. A couple of years ago, just when the war was starting, we saw Canadians and other nationalities exiting Gaza to Egypt via the Rafah crossing. Now what we're hearing from Israel is that they will allow people to leave Gaza, to go to Egypt for medical treatment, for whatever. But they're not going to allow people to go back in to Gaza from Egypt. And I can tell you, I was in Cairo just a few weeks ago. And I spoke to some Palestinians there who want to get back in because they've come out for medical treatment. They've accompanied family members. They want to get back in to be reunited with their family. Right now, it's not certain when that's going to happen. So that's going to be an issue that Egypt and Israel are going to have to resolve.
