Israel has reopened the Erez crossing into northern Gaza, allowing the passage of humanitarian aid under pressure from international allies. This move enables around 400 trucks daily to enter the enclave, although the United Nations has stated this amount is less than half of the 500 trucks needed to meet the urgent humanitarian requirements.

Supplies from the World Health Organization have reached Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahya, addressing some of the critical shortages. Despite this effort, officials warn that without a steady supply of diesel, essential services including intensive care units and operations will face the risk of shutting down, endangering lives dependent on medical devices.

Most aid to Gaza has been channeled through Egypt via the Rafa and Kerem Shalom crossing points. However, in response to calls from humanitarian agencies and pressure from Washington, the Israeli government has allowed access via the Erez crossing to deliver water, food, medicine, and other humanitarian supplies to those in need, particularly in Gaza's north.

To further facilitate the delivery of aid, the United States is constructing a floating port near Gaza's coast, with over 50% of the project completed. This initiative is aimed at easing the transport of shipments from Cyprus by sea.

While Israel, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, demonstrates willingness to permit humanitarian aid, there are concerns that a planned military operation in the city of Rafa, where around 1.5 million Palestinians are taking refuge, could severely hinder humanitarian aid efforts. The United Nations and humanitarian organizations have voiced strong objections to the operation, labeling it as a potentially unbearable escalation that could threaten the main aid distribution in Gaza.

Supplies sent by the World Health Organization have finally reached Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahya, northern Gaza. But it's still far from enough. If diesel doesn't get here in sufficient and continuous quantities and in a timely manner, work in the complex will stop, services will cease, and we will risk losing all the lives dependent on ICU ventilators or incubators and during operations. Most of the aid that is getting in is coming through Egypt via the crossing points at Rafa and Kerem Shalom, the intersection of Egypt, Gaza and Israel. But under pressure from Washington, Israel has reopened the northern Erez crossing. Humanitarian agencies had been pleading for a way to reach the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians still in the north of the Gaza Strip who are starving. We decided to open today the Erez crossing in the northern side of Gaza in order to bring water, humanitarian supply, medicine and food. To help speed up the delivery of aid, the U.S. is constructing a floating port near the Gaza coast to receive shipments coming by sea from Cyprus. As of today, we are over 50% complete on setting up the pier. The floating pier has been completely constructed and set up. The causeway is in progress. Although Benjamin Netanyahu's government is making concessions on humanitarian aid, its plan for a long-promised ground operation into the city of Rafa could derail what little progress has been made. Around 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering there. The UN chief says an invasion of the city would be an unbearable escalation, while humanitarian agencies warn it would cause the main aid distribution hub for Gaza to collapse.

At their bilateral meeting in Beijing, Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Xi Jinping of China stressed their close relationship through economic and military ties even though trade has come down since its peak in 2023. Some analysts say the drop may be related to Chinese banks' fears of U.S. sanctions for technology sales with Russia.
