The Israeli government cited the organizations' failure to comply with new regulations requiring detailed information on funding, operations, and staff as the reason for the ban.

The United Nations and several countries, including Canada, have condemned the decision, warning that it will severely impact the delivery of essential aid to Palestinians. The affected organizations have been given 60 days to wind down operations, with the ban taking full effect by March 1st.

In March, Israel overhauled its registration process requiring information on funding and operations and personal details about staff by the end of 2025. The Israeli government saying in a statement it primarily revoked the NGO licenses due to the refusal to provide complete and verifiable information regarding their employees which it called critical for preventing the infiltration of terrorist operatives into humanitarian structures. Israel said the regulations were necessary accusing Doctors Without Borders of employing two members of terrorist groups an allegation the organization denied. This is not about paperwork or compliance gaps. Impacted NGOs say they're afraid to hand over personal information about their staff to Israel. There's no trust. They bombed our convoys. They bombed our premises. They bombed our partners while they were going and carrying out life-saving work. At least 575 aid workers have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war in 2023 according to the UN. It called the ban outrageous. Canada joined nine other countries arguing that any attempt to stem the aid group's ability to operate is unacceptable. Without them, it will be impossible to meet all urgent needs at the scale required. Israel is giving the 37 aid groups 60 days to wind down their operations and says they must cease their work in Gaza and the West Bank by March 1st at which point they will no longer be permitted to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians in need.
