Iran and the United States recently concluded another round of nuclear talks held in Rome, mediated by Oman. These negotiations, conducted away from public scrutiny, involved representatives led by Steve Witkoff, the Middle East envoy for U.S. President Donald Trump, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arachi. 

These discussions come amidst a backdrop of longstanding diplomatic tension between the two nations. The initial Iran nuclear agreement, a pivotal accord reached in 2015 involving Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, was disrupted when Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from the pact in 2018 during his presidency. 

Efforts to restore the agreement have been persistent, yet challenging, even during former U.S. President Joe Biden's administration. Despite these difficulties, Iran and the U.S. have agreed to continue discussions, planning a subsequent round of talks in the near future.

The talks represent a historic moment given the tense relationship between the two countries. The Iran nuclear agreement had been a landmark deal reached between Iran and five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council in 2015. However, in 2018, Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the deal during his first term. Despite former U.S. President Joe Biden's efforts to restore the deal, the two countries have been so far unsuccessful in reaching a compromise.
