Australian bomb disposal teams have reported an increase in unexploded ordnance, such as marine markers and World War II grenades, washing up on beaches across the country. The Australian Defence Force is responsible for investigating and safely detonating these hazardous items, with around 500 such devices found nationwide so far this year.

The rise in discoveries is partly attributed to military exercises like Talisman Sabre, which have led to more ordnance appearing on beaches in regions such as south-east Queensland and the central coast. Authorities emphasize the importance of the public reporting suspicious objects to prevent injuries, highlighting the protective measures bomb disposal teams take during callouts.

What may appear to be a harmless item could actually be something far more sinister. This is a marine marker, or a Mark 58. Around 100 of them wash up on Australian beaches every year. If triggered, they can cause serious burns. Today, the bomb disposal team showed us how they destroy them. So far this year, around 500 unexploded ordnance have been found across the country. Things like grenades out of World War II. The common one is called the 36M. We'll also see projectiles fired from artillery. It's up to the Australian Defence Force to investigate and detonate. The most recent task we did was on Tryon Island, which was actually a helicopter rocket warhead, which was a result of the military exercises out of Talisman Sabre. And suspicious device sightings are becoming more common. Because of military exercises like Talisman Sabre, there's been more opportunities for them to wash up on Australian beaches in the south-east Queensland and the central coast. If the team are called out for a bomb disposal, this is the suit they would have to wear. It's quite heavy, it's actually 30 kilos, and it can withstand the pressure of an explosion. We don't mind if it ends up being a cannonball or a shot put or anything like that. We'd much prefer that the members of public inform us so we can treat that hazard versus, you know, someone getting hurt. Tiani Reid, 10 News.
