Many hospitals have been damaged, and limited healthcare access, combined with financial difficulties, has left many victims without adequate care.

Doctors estimate thousands have been wounded in the capital alone, with many unable to afford necessary operations or medications. While the government is working to rehabilitate hospitals in areas under its control, ongoing fighting outside the capital continues to put more civilians at risk.

Injured Sudanese struggle to get medical treatment

All 10-year-old Badreddine wants is to be able to spend his afternoons outside with other children. But he lost his arm to a stray bullet two years ago as fighting raged in Omdurman between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary rapid support forces. But his mother says it didn't have to be that way. Because of the circumstances, we couldn't get him medical treatment on time. We were just given first aid. When we were finally able to get to the hospital, they transferred us. And there they said his arm was infected and it had to be amputated. So we did the operation. Sudan's conflict, now in its third year, saw street battles in the capital before the army regained control earlier this year. Millions fled, but hundreds of thousands still remain, risking their lives amid artillery, drone and airstrikes. And hospitals have been damaged too, making access to treatment hard for those in the capital. There are no official figures on how many people have been injured in the conflict. Doctors say the number is likely in the thousands in the capital alone. And while fighting here may have ended, people say recovering from their injuries will take far longer. Access to health care is limited, and many just don't have the money. Ali Mohamed was injured by a shrapnel during the fighting. He was able to get to a hospital. But when a second operation became necessary, he found himself unable to pay for it or for his prescriptions. They wrote some medications for me, but I can't even afford them. I got the compression socks so that my blood flow is regular. And because of the financial suffering, I could change my dressings at home. It cost 5,000 Sudanese pounds to go to the hospital and 5,000 back. I can use that money for some home necessities. Sudan's government has been working to rehabilitate hospitals in areas under its control. But many of those injured during the fighting have been left to deal with their recovery alone. And with fighting continuing beyond the capital, more people will be caught in the crossfire and become victims of the war. Hiba Morgan, Al Jazeera, Khartoum.
