Since the program began in 2001, over 1400 babies have been safely surrendered and given the proper care. However, nearly 200 other newborns were abandoned and out of that number, 112 unfortunately died. A disturbing discovery in Mission Bay Monday, a baby boy found dead inside a port-a-potty. Investigators are trying to figure out whether he was alive before being left behind. California's safely surrendered baby law exists to prevent exactly this. A parent or guardian can legally and anonymously surrender a newborn up to 72 hours old at any designated site. No names, no questions asked. Aside from hospitals, all San Diego fire stations are designated safe surrender sites. You can look for this sign and a staff member will meet you and safely care for the newborn. At Sharp Mary Birch, one of the region's busiest maternity hospitals, social workers say many parents don't know this resource exists. I don't think parents know that it's here. I think that when people are pregnant and scared, it's hard to find the information. About half of the country has what's called safe haven boxes to add another layer of anonymity. A baby is safely placed inside this climate-controlled box, no questions asked. Though it's not in California yet, the safe Haven Alliance, the group that provides these boxes, wants to have it available everywhere. There are no consequences. Nobody's in trouble. The goal is to keep babies safe. The state also offers a hotline to help parents find their nearest location. We know this is hard. We understand that people safely surrender their baby because they want their baby to be safe. As San Diego grieves the loss of the Mission Bay infant, officials hope more people will learn about safe surrender before a desperate situation turns tragic.
