In Aceh Tamiang, these displaced people take shelter right by the river that overflowed and destroyed their entire village. Our lives are difficult. We are like beggars asking for help here and there. We have to wait for people to give us rice just so we can eat. Nur Ani takes us to see what remains of her house. It's where her parents raised her. Now it's destroyed and covered in logs, her possessions coated in mud. Nearby, Ramadani says her biggest concern is her son's health. Dimas is nine years old. He suffered an injury as a baby and cannot walk or speak. Without his medication, Ramadani says, she can tell her son is in pain. Before the flood, we took him to the doctor regularly, and so he was healthy. But now we can't go to any doctor. If there's any assistance, it's only food aid. His medication isn't expensive, but we don't have any money. Across this region, some villages have been almost completely wiped out, and many say they're not receiving the help they need. This is the village of Kota Lintang Bawa. People here say there were 800 houses before the floods, but most of them have been destroyed. Some people are staying in tents given to them by government agencies, but others say they're yet to receive the help they need, and so they've made their own shelter using plastic sheets and scrap pieces of wood and whatever else they can find. It's hot and dusty, with debris still lying scattered throughout the area. Many people have severe coughs, including children. Aceh is the worst of the three affected provinces, with nearly 40,000 destroyed homes. In Aceh Tamyang alone, more than 13,000 people are without a home. About a thousand temporary housing units are being built. The plan is to build more housing according to the number of displaced people. Small business owners are also coming to terms with their loss, spending weeks cleaning up their stores and salvaging their products. About 95% of my stock was destroyed. The only things we could save were the glass and plastic cabinets. Juliet and many others feel they're starting again from nothing, their communities destroyed and their lives completely upended.
