Survivors of recent floods and landslides in Sumatra, Indonesia, continue to struggle with displacement, illness, and limited resources. Many families, including those with newborns and the elderly, are living in makeshift shelters due to a shortage of tents and the destruction of their homes.

Aid is reaching affected areas, but access remains difficult, especially in regions cut off by landslides. Residents face significant health challenges, such as skin problems and diarrhea, due to a lack of clean water, and must travel long distances through hazardous terrain to obtain basic necessities.

Indonesia flood survivors battle illness, shortages and isolation

Mohammed Hafidz was born just a few days before floods destroyed his village. His life has already seen hardship, sleeping in a tent, his family is displaced. We only just received this tent, before that we were in a makeshift shack. At night I never put my baby down, I'm afraid of mosquitoes because there's no cover. I wanted to bring him home, but we no longer have a home. Hafidz was born with respiratory issues. Leah fears his health will get worse in these conditions. Throughout Aceh Tamiang, there aren't enough tents for everyone in need, so people have tried to make their own shelters using plastic and metal sheets in an effort to shield themselves from the intense heat and dust. Oki Abdallah says his mother has been seriously ill since the floods and her condition is only getting worse with no shelter from the elements. I carried her to safety during the floods, she cannot walk. In this situation I am trying to take care of her, while our house has turned to rubble. Two weeks since the devastating floods and landslides that hit Indonesia, Al Jazeera saw more heavy machinery reaching Aceh Tamiang, one of the worst affected areas. Aid is coming in, but people are still struggling. As I stood on this bridge, I saw houses swept away right in front of me, carried away by the river. Al Jazeera accompanied an aid crew, delivering water and other essentials to an affected village in Aceh Tamiang. Our doctors also, you know, describing that a lot of children have skin problems because there is still no clean water, diarrhea as well. In the region of Benarmaria, people are hiking barefoot in the mud after a landslide cut off a road connecting the town. People are rushing to Lok Sumawai to collect supplies, travelling for around five hours in extreme terrain. I had to wade through mud which reached my thighs just to get rice, oil and eggs.
