Indiana's Republican-controlled Senate has voted to reject a new congressional map that would have favored the GOP in upcoming midterm elections, despite strong support and pressure from former President Donald Trump. The decision, which saw 21 out of 40 Senate Republicans join Democrats in opposition, has exposed divisions within the state party and led to threats of primary challenges from national Republican leaders.

The proposed map would have made two Democratic-held seats more favorable to Republicans, but intense public debate and concerns about voter empowerment led to its defeat. Some lawmakers reported receiving anonymous threats during the process, underscoring the heightened tensions surrounding redistricting efforts in the state.

Well, we won every other state. That's the only state. It's funny because I won Indiana all three times by a landslide. You had one gentleman, the head of the Senate, I guess, Bray, whatever his name is. I heard he was against it. He'd probably lose his next primary, whatever that is. I hope he does. CBS News correspondent Natalie Brand joins us from the White House to discuss this. Good morning, Natalie. So what happened exactly and how upset is President Trump over this? We heard him there mention primaries for any Republican who defied what he wanted to do. Yeah, already the threats are coming in in the term of primaries against the lawmakers who voted against this map. This is a notable defection in a deep red state, and it really showed divisions among the state Republicans in the Senate. The president, you heard him really trying to downplay the decision by Indiana lawmakers, alluding to the fact that other states like Texas have moved to redraw their congressional maps ahead of the midterms. This is an effort for Republicans to try to hold on to power over on Capitol Hill. But really, the impact of what happened last night is going to depend on how close these races in the midterms end up being. And political operatives from both sides would really tell you that, you know, every seat can count. So what happened last night is Indiana state lawmakers in the Senate were voting on this map that would have made the state's two Democratic congressional seats more favorable in theory to Republicans. There was intense public debate. And in the end, a little more than half of Indiana Senate Republicans, 21 of them out of 40, voted against the new map, joining with Democrats. Here's one of the GOP senators opposed. Take a listen. I, like a super majority of you, do not want to see another Democrat speaker of the House. But that isn't for me to decide. And it isn't for anyone in this body to decide either. Living in a free constitutional republic means we empower voters to make those decisions and we accept their will no matter what. Now, on the other side, those who defended or voted for the new maps pointed to other states, blue states, where they say there's political gerrymandering. The Republicans, though, as we discussed, who opposed these maps, they are already facing potential primary threats by national Republican leaders, including the president, who even called out Indiana's state Senate leader, Rod Bray, on social media, saying that he and his friends won't be in politics for long, essentially. And also important to note, Errol, that as this public debate and vote, lead up to the vote happened, some of these state Republicans said that they were facing anonymous bomb threats and swatting incidents at their homes in this time of such heightened and polarized politics.
