More than a hundred rescuers in northern India struggled for a third day on Tuesday to save workers trapped underground after the road tunnel they were building collapsed. Excavators have been removing debris from the site in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand to create an escape tunnel for the 40 workers, who are all alive.

They've now spent two nights underground, but the 40 or so construction workers trapped in this tunnel in northern India are believed to be all alive and in good condition. The under-construction tunnel partially collapsed on Sunday morning. The workers are behind the debris just 200 metres from the entrance. Heavy machinery is being used to clear an escape path. In the meantime, the trapped workers are being provided with supplies. We inserted two pipes. Food is being sent through one and oxygen is being provided by another pipe. We are communicating through the food pipe. We learn that they are safe. They have food and water. We have our plans A, B or C ready to evacuate them. Hundreds of rescue workers have joined the effort and the state government says it's determined to get everyone out safe. But the incident is just the latest to raise questions about construction safety here in Uttarakhand state. The 4.5 kilometre long highway tunnel is one of many major infrastructure projects in this mountainous region. It's a seismic zone that regularly experiences earthquakes and landslides. Residents say massive infrastructure projects are going ahead without adequate planning or safety precautions. Earlier this year, hundreds of people had to be evacuated from the town of Joshimath after buildings began sinking and cracking, which locals blame on large-scale construction in the area.
