The attack, which resulted in the death of 26 men, has been identified by police to involve two gunmen of Pakistani origin. This incident is the most severe attack on civilians in India in nearly two decades.

The tensions between India and Pakistan have intensified due to this attack. Prior to the incident, diplomatic relations were already strained. In response, India has taken measures to downgrade ties with Pakistan, including the closure of their only land border and the suspension of a longstanding water treaty. These actions have been criticized by Pakistan's energy minister as unwarranted and illegal.

Public disapproval is visible in India, where thousands have gathered to protest outside the Pakistan embassy in New Delhi, demanding accountability for the attack. Families grieving their lost loved ones have come together to mourn and seek justice. One survivor, Sheetal Kalatia, recounted the tragic loss of her husband and others who were shot by the assailants. 

The disputed region of Kashmir remains a focal point of conflict between India and Pakistan, with both nations asserting sovereignty over the area. Militant violence has persisted since the late 1980s. In response to the recent attack, Prime Minister Modi has scheduled a briefing with various political entities to discuss the government's strategy. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, discussions are underway among officials to decide on their course of action.

Pakistan men shot and killed 26 men at a tourist destination in the region and police have identified two of the perpetrators as Pakistani. It marked the worst attack on civilians in the country in nearly two decades. Modi's comments are bound to further inflame relations between the two nuclear-armed countries. Diplomacy was already weak before India downgraded ties with Pakistan late on Wednesday, closing the only land border crossing between the neighbours and suspending a six-decade-old water treaty, which Pakistan's energy minister has branded as a, quote, cowardly, illegal move. Meanwhile, in New Delhi, thousands protested outside the Pakistan embassy, demanding action over the attack, while victims' families gathered to pay their respects to their loved ones. Sheetal Kalatia, survivor of the attack which killed her husband, said she was with six to seven men, including her husband, and the attacker shot them all. Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan control separate parts of Kashmir and both claim it in full. Militant violence has afflicted the region since an anti-Indian insurgency began in 1989. Modi has called for a meeting to brief all parties on the government's response to the attack and in Pakistan. The foreign minister said the government was set to hold a meeting about their country's response.
