India's largest budget airline has admitted partial blame for hundreds of flight cancellations across the country. The company is accused of failing to prepare for new rules related to working hours for pilots.

Indigo, which operates over 2,000 flights daily and holds more than 60% of India's domestic aviation market, has cancelled hundreds of flights across the country. Passengers reported receiving minimal information about the disruptions, with many blaming company negligence and poor planning.

The cancellations were attributed to a shortage of pilots and inadequate crew scheduling, exacerbated by new government rules increasing mandatory pilot rest periods. India's aviation regulator granted temporary relief on these rules, and Indigo stated that normal flight operations would resume as soon as possible.

New government regulations have increased the mandatory amount of rest that pilots must have per week. And it seems Indigo was not prepared. The reasons for the disruption are firstly that Indigo has a pilot shortage. This is because earlier they used to fly less and they thought they could make do with limited pilots. So the extra pilots they used to keep aren't available anymore. Secondly, crew scheduling and rostering of pilots hasn't been done systematically. According to a statement by India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Indigo says what it describes as mismanagement and planning gaps are the primary reason for the disruption. The regulatory body has given some relief on the new rules limiting pilots' working hours, which Indigo had asked for. Indigo says that flights will be fully restored as soon as possible.
