Dr. Reid Oldenburg, president of the San Diego Dermatological Society, recommends using at least SPF 30 and stresses that the most important factor is consistent use, regardless of the product's price.

Oldenburg notes that while some sunscreens are priced as high as $96 and others as low as $5, effective sun protection does not require a significant financial investment. He cautions that expensive products may lead to rationing, reducing their effectiveness. Ultimately, individuals should select a sunscreen they are comfortable using regularly, prioritizing protection over cost.

So I spoke with a skin expert to make sure how you can make sure your skin isn't getting burnt and you're not burning a hole in your wallet to do it. Sunscreen is absolutely essential. Whether you lather it on or spray it on, sunscreen's a must at the beach. Critically important, especially if we're out closer to the middle of the day. Absolutely it stays in the beach bag. The experts say the beach bag mainstay should be at least 30 SPF. It's really critical to find something that you actually use. Dr. Reid Oldenburg is the president of the San Diego Dermatological Society. So you don't necessarily have to break the bank. You don't have to find something that is cheap or expensive. The most important thing is don't let perfect be the enemy of good. After a search online, I found some sunscreens could cost as much as $96 and some as low as $5. I asked Oldenburg how do you find the balancing point of finding the best sunblock you're actually going to use for your buck? If people spend $100 on sunscreen, what ends up happening is it is a special item that's really expensive. So people are naturally going to ration that and they might put it in their medicine cabinet and rarely use it. So honestly, I think a lot of sunscreens, $15, $20, they can work really well as long as they're used appropriately. But Oldenburg does say it's still up to what you like and will use at the right price you want to spend. Some people tell me they don't skimp when it comes to the cost of the base layer to battle the sun's harmful rays. Oh, quality over price every day for sunscreen for us.
