They became the landlords of the West Bank and they became the strongest pressure group in Israeli society. So strong it's feared settler-backed parties have an effective veto power over any permanent ceasefire. They are the real government. It's a monster that now everyone is helpless to watch it happening. How did the settler group go to being this powerhouse and a kingmaker politically? The settlers know what they want and they are ready to pay a price for it. And what they want is to force Palestinians off their land for good, so they can annex both the West Bank and Gaza, even if it means sacrificing a hostage deal. For nearly two years, Netanyahu has been accused by Israeli protesters of choosing war and his political survival over securing a ceasefire. But now there's growing pressure, not just for a deal, but a permanent end to the conflict.
