The Müller Ice Cap ice core, the deepest in the Americas at 613 metres, is being processed in a University of Alberta lab. From it, scientists hope to trace 10,000 years of climate data in the form of trace elements, greenhouse gases, and volcanic ash layers, to reveal more about our continent's climate history.

A team of researchers in Alberta, Canada, is processing the deepest ice core ever drilled in the Americas, measuring 613 meters and extracted from Axel Heiberg Island in spring 2025. The ice core is undergoing detailed imaging, cutting, and analysis to uncover information about past climate conditions, volcanic events, and wildfire history.

The core is expected to cover at least the entire Holocene epoch, spanning over 10,000 years. About half of each meter of the core is archived for future research, while the rest is analyzed for data, including volcanic markers and evidence of past vegetation and fire activity.

What happens here is the cutting, imaging, processing, and analysis of polar and high mountain ice cores. We are doing all the imaging and the cutting and sort of prep for the Axel Heiberg Island Ice Core, which we, a big team, drilled this spring in April and May of 2025. It's the deepest ice core ever drilled in, not just in Canada, but in all of the Americas by a very long shot at 613 meters. So we're spending, we'll see, I think we're on week five right now and we'll probably be seven or eight weeks total getting, basically getting the ice core ready for analysis. All sorts of things go into dating ice cores, especially when you're below the annual layer counting area where time is really squished, so we're chopping it up. We saw three volcanic peaks in a row and that series is very indicative of the fall of the Roman Empire, which was around 500 AD. And to go back, how many years do you think? Hopefully going back over the entire Holocene, right? So at least 10,000 years, but it looks like likely longer. There's so many other things that we can look at, but one that a lot of people are very interested is reconstructing wildfires in the past. So we can reconstruct wildfire frequency and intensity and also look at changes in the vegetation that was burning over time. This room is really cool. So you, I mean, basically a meter of ice comes in the door and it works its way around the room and exits as five pieces of ice that are cut exactly for the analysis that it's destined for. The whole room, you'll see every single table, piece of equipment, everything is on wheels, and that's because we configure the room for the core we're cutting. And right now, I would say this is probably the most complex involved core processing line, certainly that we've ever had, and probably that we would have. So every instrument is working. We have eight to 10 people in there every day to be able to have everything going. An enormous amount of data is generated by that really precious, pristine inner stick from the core. It's uncontaminated. Nothing's touched this, right? It's in the middle of the cylinder. That slab, once it's cut off, that's around half of the core. And so that bottom half goes in a different direction, and then it gets bagged and archived. So about 50 percent of every single meter goes into the archive that we don't touch, and that is for future scientists to use.
