Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested four undocumented immigrants in San Diego who were previously convicted of sex crimes against children. The crimes were committed in various locations across the United States, with one arrest taking place near an elementary school in the Encanto neighborhood.

ICE officials stated that these arrests are part of efforts to remove individuals convicted of serious offenses from the community and prevent further crimes. The agency highlighted challenges in identifying some offenders due to state laws limiting cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Those detained are expected to face removal from the United States.

ICE announced it's arrested four undocumented immigrants in San Diego with previous convictions of sex crimes against children. Officials say these individual crimes were committed not just in California but across the nation. Tonight ABC 10 News reporter Tali Latoy sat down in an exclusive interview with the field office director here in San Diego to discuss the arrests and dig deeper into the crimes. One of those four arrests were made in this Encanto neighborhood and just blocks away from Encanto Elementary School. The director tells me they're focused on getting the worst of the worst off the streets and making it impossible for them to reoffend. A major bust by immigration officials. Four undocumented immigrants arrested across San Diego. Immigration officials say the four have all been convicted of sex crimes against children. We are targeting the worst of the worst and I can't think of anything worse than someone who violates a child. There is no worse. That's Patrick Diver. He's the field office director of ICE ERO in San Diego. This is his first on-camera interview with ABC 10 News since taking the position. Diver tells me the individual sex crimes span across the country. However one of them happened right here in San Diego. ICE officers arrested Eduardo Negrete in this Encanto neighborhood. It's not far from Encanto Elementary School. According to Megan's Law Negrete was convicted in 2013 for lewd acts with a child under 14. ABC 10 News found court records for a man with the same name convicted here in San Diego in 2013. During the sit-down interview Diver explained why Negrete never popped up on ICE's radar. Unfortunately due to SB 54 we weren't able to ever interview this individual. SB 54 limits state and local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. Advocates say the law was needed to ensure state resources would not be used to break up families. Because we had no footprint we weren't able to interview him and which means we could never determine whether he was in the country illegally or not. For Diver's executing enforcement action means his officers could be in danger. Safety is something he pays attention to. I want to make sure my officers are safe. They're able to secure the scene. They're able to make the arrest safely and effectively and to come home safe. As for what comes next for the people they detained. Not only are we able to remove a criminal from the community we're able to remove that criminal from the United States altogether. So they're not able to stay or remain in the community to reoffend or re-victimize any of their victims. In Encanto, Tali LaToy, ABC 10 News.
