Parents and students witnessed immigration enforcement agents detain a woman just a block away from an elementary school playground during the morning drop-off on Wednesday.

A woman was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents near Camarena Elementary School in Chula Vista, San Diego, during a school drop-off. Witnesses reported that the woman had two children in her car at the time of the arrest, and video footage showed agents in bulletproof vests arriving in unmarked vehicles. 

The Chula Vista Elementary School District confirmed the children are students at the school and stated that resources and support are being provided for them. The district emphasized that the incident occurred outside school property and reiterated that law enforcement access to campuses is limited unless there is an immediate threat to safety. Federal law allows immigration enforcement near schools but requires a warrant for certain private areas.

A South Bay parent reacting tonight after ICE agents detained a woman outside Camarena Elementary School this morning. Witnesses say the woman had two children in her car during the arrest. ABC 10 News reporter Perla Shaheen breaks down how it all played out and what the school is doing for her children. Part of this road was blocked Wednesday morning. Parents trying to drop off their kids at school watched as ICE agents handcuffed a woman just a block away from the playground. Video shows immigration enforcement agents in bulletproof vests getting out of unmarked cars with flashing police lights near Camarena Elementary in Chula Vista. I'm surprised that they didn't chose to do it at that time in that area. It was around 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The cars on the road filled with kids waiting to get dropped off at school. Yeah, it was just surprising. I was like, wow, it's happening right here. Ashley Cena says she saw ICE agents pull over and detain the driver of a white Tesla. I saw them pull out a lady from her car and she was in handcuffs and they just brought her over to the SUV. Cena says there was a little boy and girl in the car talking to agents. Chula Vista Elementary School District confirmed the children are students at Camarena Elementary. The district says it's providing resources and support for the children, but could not confirm their location. You don't think that something like that would happen like on the way to school in front of the school. I mean, this is a very nice neighborhood. The superintendent sent out this letter to families in the district emphasizing this incident happened outside school property. The letter reads there are protocols in place that limit law enforcement from accessing school campuses. It says officials are only permitted to interact with students if there is an immediate threat to campus safety. I know they've been around people, you know, posted on the Ring app that ICE is at the Target or the Walmart and so, I mean, they're just doing their job. Federal law currently allows immigration enforcement near schools, churches and hospitals. But agents are required to provide a warrant in certain private areas of campuses.
