With the increasing number of electric vehicles on the road, concerns are emerging about how owners can safely evacuate during hurricanes and severe storms. In regions with high EV ownership, such as Florida, experts recommend keeping vehicles fully charged and planning evacuation routes in advance.

Owners are advised to be aware that charging stations may be unavailable due to power outages and to avoid driving through floodwaters, as exposure to salt water can cause EV fires. If leaving an EV behind, it should not be left in a garage in a flood zone or plugged into a charger with low battery power.

Hurricane Preparation: Electric Vehicles And Evacuations

With the increase of electric vehicles on the road, there are growing concerns about evacuations when big storms are churning toward land. And for a state like Florida, which has the second most electric vehicles in the nation, there are legitimate worries about whether or not all those vehicles can get to safety. If a tropical storm or hurricane is coming, get your vehicle charged. Make sure it's fully charged. Then also plan your route. Where are you going to go? Also keep in mind that, you know, the charging stations may not be working. They may be inoperable because you're going to lose power. So think about what your contingency plan is for there. Before a storm, experts urge you to know your evacuation route. Also, it is imperative to keep your battery power at 100% before an evacuation. If possible, steer clear of charging stations and never drive through floodwaters with an electric vehicle. Your vehicle may catch fire if it's exposed to salt water. As for those who have to leave their electric car behind in an evacuation, it's important to never leave those vehicles inside a garage in a flood zone. Also, do not leave an EV plugged into a charger while maintaining battery power under 30%.
