Local authorities in Guerrero state, including the city of Acapulco, have suspended classes and established hundreds of temporary shelters in anticipation of the hurricane's impact.

Memories of the deadly Hurricane Otis remain strong in the region, prompting heightened precautions. Forecasters warn that Erick may strengthen further before landfall, bringing risks of storm surges, coastal flooding, mudslides, and destructive waves. Additional shelters and emergency personnel have been deployed in neighboring states to assist with potential clean-up and relief efforts.

Locals around the tourist haven of Acapulco aren't taking any chances. Hurricane Eric, though still out at sea, doubled in strength in just one day. Authorities here aren't taking any chances either. Classes have been suspended at all educational levels throughout the state on June 18th and 19th and 582 temporary shelters have been set up in the eight regions of the state. Memories of Hurricane Otis are still fresh here. The powerful Category 5 storm killed at least 50 people. We're taking precautions because with Otis we never expected one of that magnitude to come and now with climate change the water is warmer and the hurricanes are more powerful. Forecasters warn that Eric is expected to strengthen before making landfall, bringing storm surges, coastal flooding, mudslides and destructive waves. Unfortunately it looks like a very bad situation for people that live in that part of the coast and perhaps inland communities as well. Because any time you put a lot of rain with mountainous terrain, it's problematic. Authorities have set up 2,000 temporary shelters in Chiapas, Guillero and Oaxaca and hundreds of troops and electricity workers have been deployed to help with any clean-up efforts.
