They were finally able to contain the fire. We have areas that seem calm, like this one, where we can work without moving too much. And then, throughout this afternoon, we've had some serious flare-ups and hot spots. For more than 48 hours, the battle took place over a massive area. Helicopters and air tankers carried out hundreds of airdrops, the fire consuming an area bigger than the cities of Paris and Bordeaux put together. Now there's just scorched earth as far as the eye can see. This couple came back to survey the damage to their house. It's all melted. Their dream home, where they lived for 25 years, is gone. But thanks to firefighters, they escaped with their lives. We passed through hell with the firefighters. In survival mode. And we had a real feeling we might die. It's devastating, actually. Traumatic. Every time I hear a firetruck siren, I get knots in my stomach. This couple now finding comfort in each other and in loved ones, and counting their blessings even in the face of tremendous loss.
