President Donald Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports have significantly affected the US fireworks market, as over 95% of fireworks are sourced from China. Tariffs were initially set at 20%, then raised to 145%, before being reduced to 30%, causing disruptions in shipments and production.

Industry leaders report that some US importers halted orders due to the high tariffs, and Chinese manufacturers temporarily stopped production. These disruptions have led to supply chain concerns, with retailers expecting higher prices and fewer choices for consumers. There is also concern that ongoing issues could impact supply for the following year, which marks a major US anniversary.

Back to CBS News 24-7. Hey, we are just days away from celebrating America's birthday and it is not the 4th of July without those cookouts, the parades, and of course, fireworks. However, this year you might be paying more to light up the night sky. CBS News correspondent, Shanelle Call dug into that issue for us. Shanelle, do Americans have a short fuse for what they're having to pay? Well, good to see you, Reid. So I wonder if you know this, most fireworks actually come from China. They're produced in the fall and the winter. And then what happens is they're typically shipped to the US a couple of months before July 4th. But this year, some of those shipments were actually complicated by President Trump's tariffs. For many Americans, this 4th of July tradition starts here. Retailers across the country, including this one in Youngstown, Ohio, are bracing for what's typically their busiest week of the year. That's where we do 90% of our business. More than 95% of fireworks come from China. In March, President Trump imposed a 20% tariff on everything from China. A month later, he pushed it to 145%. Executive Director of the American Pyrotechnics Association, Julie Heckman. Well, the timing of the tariffs couldn't have hit at a worse time. The majority of US importers told China, do not ship our product, we can't afford to pay. Then last month, tariffs were pulled back to 30%. It's creating a supply chain problem. And I think the next phase could be congestion at the West Coast ports, like we experienced during COVID. This can mean fewer choices and higher prices for shoppers this year. On about 30% of our products, there's going to be some effect in the price. We're not gonna pass all of it on to the consumers. And so, Reid, China actually stopped making fireworks for about two months when tariffs were at their highest earlier this year. And what's happened now is there is some industry concern that that essentially could create a supply chain problem come next year. And this is important because next year is when the US will celebrate its 250th birthday. All right, Chanel Call watching all things fireworks, a firecracker in and of herself. Thank you so much.
