Georgia is pretty far away from the tropics. Yet, somehow, the folks at Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta are able to match gallons of water to the genuine tropical ocean waters near the equator.

The Ocean Voyager tank in Atlanta, Georgia, is designed to replicate tropical ocean conditions for its diverse marine inhabitants, including sharks. The water is maintained at 76 degrees Fahrenheit, which is suitable for warm water species typically found near the equator. 

Beyond temperature control, the tank's management includes mimicking natural ocean micronutrients in the saltwater mixture and simulating natural light cycles, including minimal lighting at night to resemble moonlight. These measures help create a safe and stable environment for thousands of animals living in the 6.3 million-gallon tank.

How to keep 6.3 million gallons of water shark-safe

I'm currently standing next to the tropical warm waters of the Ocean Voyager tank, which, you know, we're not in the tropics. We're in Atlanta, Georgia, but this is as close to tropical waters as you can get. So there's a lot of species from all around the world, but we do focus more on our tropical species. So this water is 76 degrees Fahrenheit, which might not sound very tropical, but it can support all of our warm water species that you might find around the equator. But as I'm sure you can imagine, it's a little more complicated than just keeping the water at a specific temperature. Generally, we try to mimic natural ocean conditions. So our saltwater mixture mimics some of the micronutrients and things you would find in the ocean. We do try to give them some sense of night and day. So the lights at night when we are closed are very, very minimal. It's sort of like a moonlight setting. And because there are thousands of animals in this tank in 6.3 million gallons of water, there is no complaining about the thermostats.
