Thirty-seven years after a man lost part of his arm in an accident, a new temperature-sensitive prosthetic is allowing him to feel the warmth of touch from another person.

This patient is feeling the warmth of touch from another person for the first time in decades. It's thanks to his new temperature-sensitive prosthetic, which is producing thermal sensations in his phantom index finger. The technology allows amputees to feel the difference between hot and cold, but researchers say its benefits go far beyond that. The technology is called MiniTouch. Described as simple electronics, it transmits thermal information from the fingertip of the prosthetic hand to the amputee's residual arm. Dr. Solomayn Shoker is one of the researchers behind it and a neuroengineer at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. We have developed a prototype of prosthesis which integrates sensors which can convey thermal information in a natural way for amputees. So the sensation that they have is similar to the one you and I will have. Researchers have long known that amputees could feel sensations in their missing limbs, but this technology is the first to enable them to distinguish temperature, even with their own existing prosthetics. Several amputees participating in trials reported the ability to rediscover body contact as the most important benefit. When they were touching the hand of somebody, of a loved one, that seemed to be even more important, although not maybe directly functional, but much more important from a social point of view. We could also show it with our prototype. We could show that with eyes closed they could detect if they were touching a fake hand versus a real hand and that they could really have this more human-like touch when they were in contact with somebody. Researchers say their next step is to make the device ready for home use.
