Most parents have no idea: extremists are targeting their kids through chats and games like Roblox. Sometimes, the recruiters are barely any older than their victims and the radicalization happens right under families' noses.

Extremist groups are increasingly targeting children for radicalization through social media and online gaming platforms, according to a DW News investigation. Recruiters, often only slightly older than their targets, use attention-grabbing content to draw children into private chat groups where discussions can escalate from everyday topics to sharing violent materials.

These groups, detected worldwide, provide young members with a sense of purpose and community, making them particularly dangerous. The report cites a recent case in which five teenagers in Czechia and Austria, radicalized online, attempted to set fire to a synagogue. Experts warn that gaming platforms like Roblox are also being used to replicate and glorify acts of violence, exploiting issues such as loneliness and insecurity among young males.

How extremists target kids through games

We're seeing more young men becoming radicalized online, not mainly by adults, but by slightly older kids. 13-year-olds are influencing 11-year-olds through social media content that's made to grab their attention and draw them in. After the first contact on social media, recruiters tend to invite the children into private chat groups like on WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. That way, the conversation is hidden from view. Miro and his colleagues have shown us some screenshots from these groups, the names of which we are purposely not sharing. Some days, they would just discuss normal school topics. On other days, documents such as a kill guide or terror guide were shared. The group reportedly has members as young as 12. These groups are being detected around the world. They form a community. And children are given a purpose, a conscience, a motivation to live, a purpose in life. And that's what makes these groups so dangerous. These groups are linked to terror attacks and hate crimes against minorities. For example, Czech and Austrian police arrested five teenagers in June 2025. They had been radicalized online and tried to set fire to a synagogue. But social media is not the only place to recruit kids. Most of it happens primarily in gaming worlds. The platform Roblox really stands out for us. The popular kids' game Roblox also has a shady side. While many of its virtual worlds are cute and innocent, some replicate terror attacks or mass shootings. Miro Ditry says that the radicalization of young male teenagers is linked to other issues in society. In a post-Covid world, there are many crises affecting the youth. Loneliness and masculinity are huge topics. And these issues unfortunately lead some people into right-wing extremist circles. Miro says frustration about these crises makes young male teenagers susceptible to hypermasculine rhetoric and that these groups know exactly how to exploit the insecurities.
