Zoos, particularly those in regions vulnerable to hurricanes, have developed comprehensive plans to ensure the safety of animals and staff. Preparations include stocking up on essential supplies such as food, water, and medication, and conducting regular emergency drills to keep staff ready for extreme weather. 

When a hurricane approaches, some animals are moved indoors while others are secured in their habitats, and a dedicated team remains onsite throughout the storm. These measures, refined through experience with past storms, aim to protect both animal and human lives during severe weather events.

How does a zoo prepare for a hurricane?

Like a page from Noah's Ark, two by two, these flamingos evacuated, moving all the flamingos for the hurricane from Hurricane Irma in 2017. Zoos are no stranger to storms or evacuations, something that we unfortunately have a lot of practice with, but we are very good at. So when a hurricane threatens the Central Florida Zoo has a plan in place. Most of that is getting as many resources here to the zoo as possible before the storm hits. So for us, that's bags of grain, bales of hay, barrels of water, medication for the animals. Teams work for days to turn the zoo into a safe shelter for animals and their caretakers. We have a very strict hurricane policy here at the zoo. So, you know, several days out, we are already stocking up food, stocking up water. All of our teams, animal care teams and zoo teams included, all have our hurricane protocols. So we follow those very strictly. Accredited zoos hold regular emergency drills to make sure staff are ready to protect animals during extreme weather. Some of our animals do get brought inside and we monitor them that way. Other animals, you know, we make sure that they are comfortable as possible within their habitats. And we do have a team that sleeps here overnight during the storms to ride out the storm. Every storm is different and each one gets you better prepared to respond faster and protect more lives for the next one. For AccuWeather, I'm Leslie Hudson reporting.
