As green policies in the European Union come under scrutiny, three in four EU respondents say it is important that the bloc uphold its environmental laws.

A majority of adults in 10 European Union countries believe that large companies should be held accountable for human rights and environmental harms within their value chains, according to a recent Ipsos poll. Over 60% of respondents support legal obligations for these companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with particularly strong backing in Italy, France, and Sweden.

The survey also found that most citizens favor prosecuting companies in court and requiring them to pay damages as the most effective means of accountability. Public disclosure of environmental harm is also seen as important, though less so than legal action. Despite these strong opinions, only a minority of respondents reported being aware of recent discussions about EU environmental and climate legislation.

As green policies in the EU are under the spotlight, around three quarters of adults in 10 EU countries say large companies with 250 or more employees should be held accountable for human rights and environmental harms in their value chains. This is according to a poll conducted by Ipsos in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain and Sweden. More than half also said that it was more important for the EU to uphold its own environmental laws since the US administration scaled back on its own environmental protections. Over 60% of the bloc's citizens say large companies should face legal obligations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. This position had particularly strong support in Italy at 69%, France at 68% and Sweden at 67%. Respondents think prosecuting large companies in court and requiring them to pay damages for loss or suffering is the most appropriate way to hold them accountable for human rights violations. Meanwhile, 45% of those surveyed state that publicly disclosing any instances of environmental harm is the best way of holding large companies accountable. Only 23% of respondents say they heard or read any discussions about changes to the EU's environmental and climate legislation in the past 12 months.

The Trump administration is awaiting word from the Supreme Court after asking it to allow the immediate deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A lower court blocked the move.
