President Donald Trump’s anti-crime and clean up efforts in Washington, DC have pushed the homeless population out of encampments, leaving many desperately searching for answers.

Many affected people reported losing important documents and belongings during these raids, with some expressing fears of being left with nowhere to go as shelters and other facilities reach capacity.

City officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, have announced plans to conduct an additional census of unsheltered residents and to connect them with available services. The mayor stated that the city does not expect to see further homeless encampments and will work to ensure people can access shelter, though some homeless individuals remain skeptical about the availability of housing and support.

One man constantly travels with a cart and his two dogs, fearing his things will end up in the trash. I pulled this thing around, you know, with my belongings in it, because I'm afraid my stuff's going to be taken, thrown in the trash, discarded, you know. It's kind of a way that I'm sort of feeling like I'm trash. Hi. Hi, how are you? Good. You want everything? Perfect. Just a burger? You're welcome. They want to take people's homes, take their tents, take their cardboard boxes where they sleep. Then put us up in a hotel and get us housing. There's no housing. The hospital's upfield. The jail's upfield. Homeless population shelters are upfield. If everything is upfield and they happen to arrest us, where are we going to be? We're going to end up in the federal system, the federal bureau of prisons. This idea about homelessness is BS. Law enforcement is not who I fear. Ward 8 is one of the most dangerous parts of this city. But why fight with the police? I have been unhoused for about eight years. I'm 60 years old. I don't stay in the district anymore at night. I leave. I go to Virginia until the borders of District of Columbia, the atrocities we're doing here, go to there. And I guess I'll just keep pushing out. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has laid out next steps for the city's handling of people experiencing homelessness. The mayor plans to run an additional census count of those currently unsheltered and connect them with available resources. We want to know where they are so that we can connect them to services and get them to come inside. We don't expect that we're going to have homeless encampments, and we are going to work to make sure that people can come into shelter.
