Lebanese armed group Hezbollah on Saturday will commemorate one year since its then-chief Hassan Nasrallah was killed by Israel, the opening salvo of a war that ultimately battered his once-powerful group and left swathes of Lebanon in ruins.

Hezbollah supporters have marked the first anniversary of the assassination of their former chief, Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in an Israeli attack that also resulted in significant casualties and destruction across Lebanon. The Israeli assault began with targeted detonations and culminated in a bombing that killed Nasrallah, leading to over 4,000 deaths nationwide.

Despite a ceasefire, Israeli forces remain in southern Lebanon, and the Lebanese government has pledged to disarm Hezbollah as a condition for international reconstruction aid. Hezbollah, however, has rejected these demands, with Nasrallah's son affirming the group's refusal to disarm. The group has suffered losses in leadership, weaponry, and regional alliances, but analysts note that Hezbollah is gradually rebuilding its capabilities.

Days later, the group's leader of more than three decades was assassinated with a salvo of dozens of bombs. They were the opening acts to an Israeli assault that wreaked destruction and killed more than 4,000 people across the country. Despite a ceasefire, Israel continues to occupy parts of the south. The Lebanese government has pledged to disarm Hezbollah by the end of the year, a demand of the United States and Saudi Arabia before they'll fund reconstruction. In an interview with Reuters, Nasrallah's son spelt out what Hezbollah thinks about disarming. Never, in your wildest fantasies or dreams, let them dream, hope and exercise their imagination. Hezbollah has lost leaders, weapons, communications and a key ally in Bashar al-Assad's Syria, which was their main route for supplies from Iran. But many analysts agree Hezbollah is slowly but surely rebuilding.
