Odinga especially commanded deep devotion among his Luo tribe based in Western Kenya, many of whom believed he was cheated of the presidency by electoral fraud. Though mainly known as an opposition figure, he became prime minister in 2008. He struck a political pact with former president Uhuru Kenyatta in 2018 and with Ruto last year in a career of shifting alliances.

The Trump administration is awaiting word from the Supreme Court after asking it to allow the immediate deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A lower court blocked the move.
