California's reservoirs are currently above average, with water levels ranging from 103% to 138% of normal, following several consecutive wet seasons. The region has already received its typical seasonal rainfall by the halfway point of the rainy season, and more precipitation is expected.

Heavy rain and mountain snow are forecast to impact much of California and parts of Arizona, with up to four feet of snow possible in the Sierra and Donner Pass. These conditions may lead to flooding in some areas and hazardous travel, particularly in mountain passes, as snow levels drop and blizzard conditions become possible.

We've already filled the reservoirs and we're doing well with water supply. So we're going to be dealing with more flood concerns moving forward. So overall, when we look at the reservoirs, these have been in good shape for about two years now. Statewide, we're in really good shape. A surplus, if we were at 100%, that would be precisely average for this time of the year. So we're running about 103 to about 138%. So about three to a 38% surplus above where we typically would be, thanks to several decent wet years in a row, wet seasons. And the wet season, the rainy season here in Los Angeles runs from October 1st to the end of March. We typically see about 13 inches in that time frame. We've already seen 13 inches just since October 1st. We're only halfway through it. So we're really seeing a really impressive wet season yet again. Now, the snow has been a little bit below average in some cases. We had a good start back in early November. Then a lot of that snow melted off. But now we're going to be building back more snow into the snowpack there for the Sierra this weekend and next week with two to four feet coming to Donner Pass. Showers are just beginning to increase up into northern California near Eureka this evening. But this will be expanding through tonight. Tomorrow, we'll have widespread rain back into San Francisco. Snow levels will be gradually coming down. So we're going to go back into snow mode at Donner Pass along Interstate 80 in California on Saturday. And you can see how this plays out here with future radar and clouds as this system unfurls, bringing widespread rain and some big-time snow amounts. Here we are Saturday at 10 a.m. Pacific time. Rain returning to Orange County eventually. But initially here it's Ventura County and into Los Angeles. Then it slides farther southeast into a little bit more of Orange and San Diego counties. But also significant rain will be falling in northern California. Big-time snow. The snow is just perpetually coming down here this weekend into the Sierra. And again, really significant amounts. Feet of snow as snow levels drop all the way down at their lowest, around 4,500 feet. Near the end of this event on Sunday night and Monday, we may see a blizzard break out in some of the mountains here with feet of snow falling in the passes. We're looking at 2 to 4 more inches of rain between now and Monday evening in San Francisco. L.A., 1 to 2 inches. But just to the north, up into the transverse ranges there, we're looking at 2 to 4 inches of rain, including in the Grapevine. And snowfall amounts are really going to be coming down pretty heavily here, with snow levels dropping to around 7,500 feet early in the event. And then plunging down, that means more and more snow for Interstate 80. And one thing for next week, heavy rain, mountain snow expanding. Flagstaff's seen about 8 inches so far. Typically by now you're at around 29 inches. So we're well below average in Flagstaff for snow. You're going to get some heavy snow there in Arizona in the mountains next week.
